Violation of Merit in Recruitment of Educators

Yousaf Abbasi wrote a column in daily express today about suspected corruption in the recruitment of educators in Punjab. We are highlighting some key points from his column as our rulers don’t read Urdu newspapers. You can read his column in Urdu on this page. Lets see, what he says about suspected corruption in the recruitment process of educators(Subject Specialists in Punjab).

Government advertised 29622 posts of educators few months ago. It was also declared that recruitment on these posts will be strictly made on merit. Thousands of candidates applied for these posts of subject specialists. All these candidates appeared in NTS test but now government is not recruiting the successful candidates. Now again education department is receiving application forms directly from all candidates. The price of this form is 200 rupees. The candidates whose names were included in final interview list are informed at the time of interview that there are no vacant seats in their region. Specially in Sialkot many seats or physical education and arts teachers were dropped after the NTS test. Is this merit or open corruption?

There are rumors wondering that some politicians are pressurizing government for allotment of politician quota in these educators seats and government is going to recruit even those educators who had failed in NTS test. If these rumors are baseless then why education department is not recruiting the successful candidates as subject specialists. How it is possible that after completing all the scrutiny process now education department came to know that in certain areas there are no vacant seats.

We also appeal to Chief Minister of Punjab to look into this matter as we can not expect corruption in your regime specially in education department. How such teacher can teach ethics to his students who himself is involved in corruption. Teaching is the most respectable profession in the society and teachers should be selected on merit. We hope that Government of Punjab will ensure merit and transparency  in the recruitment of educators.
